In the final stages of their professional education, students get so busy in fulfilling the final requirements of their degree that they forget the main purpose of their education. While all those things are also crucial, developing a vision statement regarding their career is equal, if not more, important.
Therefore, after gauging the importance of planning, we have devised some steps with the help of which students can create a vision statement. This vision statement will not only prepare students for the upcoming times but will also motivate and galvanize them.
Here are 7 steps for developing a vision statement of your career …
1: Take a lot of time
If you want to articulate an effective vision statement for your career, you should not be fooled to believe that it is a quick process. Like an outdated steam engine, our career stutters in its start and it is only after several efforts that it kicks off in grand fashion. So take your time, sort out your favorite career path and only then proceed further forward. Speak with people to get advice on too.
2: Review the career goals
Of the large number of interviewees that I’ve met, most of them told me about one question that was asked during the interview: What’s your career goal? Therefore, before telling a complete stranger about your wishes, review your goals to make sure that they’re realistic, meet your aspirations and are aligned with your aptitude.
3: Don’t be pragmatic
While there is a huge difference between a pragmatic and self-defeating attitude, most of the students, especially those who have suffered failures, think both of them are the same.
In order to save your time from differentiating between both, eliminate pragmatism from your life. Similar to the Red Bull tagline which says that “it gives you wings”, assume that your attitude has also got wings which won’t allow it to land on the ground.
4: Do some visioning exercises
As human beings, we are always allured towards power, money and reputation. Think of the time when you’ll have all what you want now and what’ll you do with it. How will you spend your money? How will you influence people with your reputation? How will you get your errands done with your Power? Such thinking will stimulate you in giving your best for the betterment of your career.
5: Write your career Vision
Create your vision statement on paper. Make sure that it is concise yet elaborate. It shouldn’t be fussy rather, try to use as many eloquent words as possible. This will create in you the confidence to achieve your goals.
6: Keep your Vision statement Visible
In order to make sure that your career is on the right path, stack the paper, which contains vision statement, on your bedroom wall.
7: Review it regularly
As you might have known by now, everything in our life goes according to a plan which is devised by some higher entity. Therefore, it will be foolish if I suggest you not to make any change in your vision statement. Depending upon the circumstances of your life, devise an annual plan to review your vision statement.
